Tammy and Ian got married in style at Ralston Hall in Belmont, California. The couple paired classic wedding elements with a bit of whimsy and fun. The traditional Jewish ceremony involved all of Tammy and Ian's family and friends on the gorgeous steps of Ralston Hall. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a casual dinner of tacos straight from a taco truck and mini bundt cakes for dessert!

The overall tranquil and understated look of this celebration is perfect for the outdoor venue. The soft wheat color palette ever-present in the rolling grass-covered hills is accentuated by dollops of bright orange, yellow, and a wisp of aqua.
If you are a DIY bride, this couple has a virtual treasure trove of ideas. The selection of a sweet and charming single poppy flower graphic seems to be a centralized theme through this gorgeous country-styled wedding. The graphic acts as a base to create the warmth and flavor of this celebration.
The bride’s bouquet is a burst of sunshine – the brightly colored poppies and ranunculus immediately capture the attention of every guest. The selection of a native flower such as the poppy makes the table arrangements simple and relatively inexpensive. A collection of wildflowers looks amazing in a selection of simple glass vases. The aqua color palette has been infused into the florals by wrapping the vases with serenely colored ribbon.
The fun twist on the guest book is brilliant and so well displayed. I love how the couple uses a similar display of jute hung across the side of the barn with simple old-fashioned clothes pins to display their wonderful collection of candid Polaroid photography.

Eulalia and Paul had a wedding that we would all love to have – casual, elegant, fun, and fabulous! Sally & Mike at the Chileno Valley Ranch hosted the event with the ceremony on the back lawn and the reception in the barn. The ranch is a working cattle ranch and apple orchard and dang those burgers were good! Pam Ferrari created a wonderful menu with all locally provided ingredients – all perfectly prepared. Paul Robertson decorated the barn with poppies and Eulalia wore the most amazing dress designed by her and Azadeh Couture - check out the hand applied flowers all over the skirt. The couple was gracious enough to let me drag them out of dinner to catch the sunset on the bluffs above the ranch – and the photos are amazing! It was a perfect day – Michelle Walker.

Elana and Eli's second day celebration took place at the Four Seasons in San Francisco. Once again, Suzy Somers of Always RSVP worked her magic to put on a lavish affair featured a custom red tent in the large Four Seasons ballroom. The moody red lighting, beautiful florals and a custom wedding cake all added to the unique party atmosphere. Taking a cue from the previous day's celebration, Elana and Eli danced the night away without having to worry about bothering the neighbors!

They held the ceremony at the Love Temple and it was spectacular. Erin and Andrew got married at one of my very favorite venues, Villa Montalvo (I've wanted to get married there since I was 5 years old :-). Actually, they had the wedding of my dreams with all my favorite vendors... Kathleen at the villa is a dream, Le Papillon is perfection, Shawna at Flower Diva's always creates something extraordinary (LOVE this pink & black color palette!), Studio Cake baked a delicious cake, and the voice of my young adult-hood (starting on college radio), Raffi of Sound in Motion d-jayed a fabulous party. And take a look at the adorable mini-ballerina's! It was an amazing day and I am so thrilled that I was there to capture it all for them to relive over and over in photographs!

Kim and Matthew were recently wed at one of my favorite wineries, Gundlach Bundshu in Sonoma. Such a gorgeous venue - such a gorgeous day - such a gorgeous couple! Kelly and Meren at A Savvy Event planned a perfect day... after a walk down the aisle (presided over by my good friend, Nick Dolata), they had dinner amongst the trees catered by The Girl and the Fig (yum!). Lauren at Fleur Essence created beautiful florals and Kelly at Inticing Creations made them a wonderful cake to cut. These awesome purple linens are from La Tavola and the rentals are from Classic Party Rentals. It was perfect.

Grace and Tommy (with their friends and families) came all the way from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to get married at the amazing Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay. After the ceremony on the North Bluff, their guests were treated to a bit of Italy with delicious appetizers and an accordion player on the Miramontes Terrace. We then moved into the Miramontes room where Amy Burke had created magic in purples for this wonderful couple. After a fabulous dinner everyone moved into the Observatory where a modern purple and white lounge was revealed for a night of music and dancing. The evening finished with s'mores cooked over the open fire... It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Armed with style buzzwords like “black tie” and “modern,” Courtney Geesey (27 and a public relations specialist) and Ethan Dorr (33 and a trader) picked City Hall, an iconic San Francisco spot, as their venue. They decked it out in a color combo of black graphite and deep, reddish persimmon, and included a few Art Deco details to convey the timeless vibe they were after. As another nod to the city, a print of the Bay Bridge appeared on many of the day’s paper elements.

"Black and white weddings never go out of style. Classic Hollywood glamor has hit weddings this season with lots of flair and breathtaking results. One of the biggest assets designers have these days is the use of not only color, but depth and texture in their designs. The availability of linen, unique china, flatware, chargers, glassware, custom designed menus, and collateral have allowed everyone to take their designs up a notch.

Why black and white? The color combination is crisp, clean, and a bit retro. A black and white design can take on a very modern stylish look – it says classic ballroom or whispers soft and romantic. Black and white can take on many different personalities. We are finding that it’s universal appeal can fit in an outdoor garden, a winery, or even the local bistro.

I love the styling of this incredible black and white soiree at Jacuzzi Family Vineyards in Sonoma. This incredible tablescape takes your breath away – it is the first thing everyone entering the dramatic barrel room will notice, and they will be talking about it for weeks to come. Using a long captain’s table that spans the length of the room is a great way to use the space. When you have a party of 1oo and a room that fits 200, this design technique is an ideal way to make a great dramatic statement, but also, it creates the illusion of filling the space. You never want the room to look empty!
Jacuzzi Vineyards is equally well-known for the extensive olive groves on property and the incredible selection of olive oils available for tasting. This wedding has provided their guests with a grove of olive trees – they have placed them close to the tables, again to help define the space and provide a frame for the dinner celebration. I love how the couple has worked at incorporating so many of the elements found outside the facility into their design.

Cornerstone Gardens holds a special place in my heart. Yes, I do have an office there, but I love it for so many reasons... it's beautiful, quirky & elegant (not an easy combination to pull off!) and lots of fun. Kind of like this couple, Sara & Calvin.

On a gorgeous day last weekend they tied-the-knot with 200 of their friends & family. It was even more fun (if possible) because they are friends of my fabulous 2nd shooter, Vivian. What a great time everyone had! Kelly Clooney designed an amazing day with Viola Flowers and Wine Country Party & Event providing the perfect touch to the kelly green & cobalt blue theme. And with food by the ever-fabulous Elaine Bell topped by confections by Perfect Endings, it was just that... perfect.

Last Saturday Lesley & Jamie got married at the majestic Stanford Memorial Church (they met at Stanford as Freshman). I adore this church. It's grand, colorful, and photographs beautifully. After fun portraits on the portico, we headed over to the equally beautiful Ralston Hall for a fun reception. My favorite thing about Ralston Hall? The bamboo garden and that fabulous striped floor. Held at the fabulous Terra Events & Gallery in San Francisco, Michelle Barrionuevo-Mazzini and her staff from MB Wedding Design & Events designed a perfect event! Lots of my friends were there - some as sponsored vendors, many as guests. There was a red-carpet photo wall, fabulous food & drink, and great music. Last weekend Thea & Michael joined 100 of their friends & families at the wonderful Mill Valley Outdoor Art Club to get married. It was a beautiful, misty day full of love, laughter, and joy. These Bay Area natives met at the most San Francisco of places - the SF Symphony! Here is a short excerpt from my notes after meeting the couple... "loves outdoors, both locals - Michael Marin - Thea SF, wildflowers over organized rose bushes, laid-back, M proposed on beach in Maui, Thea cycles, Michael runs". I'm a big fan of cheese. By cheese, I mean touristy places in San Francisco. I love to work with familiar locations and shoot them in a whole new way. And I love engagement sessions... They're fun, relaxed, and a great way for the couple to get really comfortable with me sticking a really big lens in their face. (Just kidding... it's usually only a mildly big lens :-)

Last Saturday I came home and told my husband, "I created important work today". (I photographed 2 new babies, an Engagement Session, and doggies.) In case you don't already know, I LOVE my job and am thrilled when I get to work with clients over and over. I have been working with this wonderful couple since 2004 when they were married. We've created many, many wonderful photos of their growing family throughout the years that they have displayed all over their lovely home. I am truly honored.

I attended a very cool open house recently. My good friend & colleague, Morgan Doan coordinates the rental of an AMAZING art gallery for weddings & events. Here's the 411 (and if you book an event at the gallery, can I PLEASE be the photographer???):

The Laurent Studio is an incredible open art studio with over 13,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space and is now available as a private event venue. The studio is comprised of two galleries. Gallery I and II can be rented as one large event space and/ or separately. The studio is available for rentals Monday through Friday after 4:00 PM (exception can be made on a case by case basis) and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Facts about Borneo

I am going to Borneo. I decided ealier this week. It was between Borneo (to climb Mt. Kinabalu) or Kerala (in Southern India) to cycle for 2 weeks. I've been to India, so Borneo won. Everyone is asking me, "Where is Borneo?" I didn't even really know! (Except that it was beautiful and tropical - from seeing it on Survivor.) So, to answer your questions, I turned to that bastian of facts, Wikipedia. (I've added a few of my own notes :-)

Borneo (Malay: Borneo, Indonesian: Kalimantan) is the third largest island in the world and is located north of Australia, at the geographic centre of Maritime Southeast Asia.

The island is divided among three countries: Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. Approximately 73% of the island is Indonesian territory (Kalimantan). The Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah (East Malaysia), in the north, occupy about 26% of the island. The sovereign state of Brunei (doesn't a sultan live there?), located on the north coast, comprises about 1% of Borneo's land area.

Borneo is surrounded by the South China Sea to the north and northwest, the Sulu Sea to the northeast, the Celebes Sea and the Makassar Strait to the east, and the Java Sea and Karimata Strait to the south. It is the largest island in the Malay archipelago, with an area of 743,330 square kilometres (287,000 sq mi). To the west of Borneo are the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. To the south is Java. (I think that means there's going to be GREAT coffee!) To the east is Sulawesi, and to the northeast, the Philippines.

Borneo's highest point is Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia, with an elevation of 4,095 m (13,435 ft) above sea level it is the third highest peak in South East Asia, making Borneo the world's third highest island.

Borneo has significant cave systems. Clearwater Cave, for example, has one of the world's longest underground rivers. Deer Cave is home to over three million bats, with guano accumulated to over 100 metres (330 ft) high. (Ewwwww. Gross!)

Travel Photography trip to Borneo!....

Every winter I go somewhere exotic and off-the-beaten-path to work on my travel photography. This year I'll be in Borneo for a 4-day climb to the highest peak in SE Asia, Mt. Kinabalu. This is the 20th highest peak in the world, but not to worry... I've already climbed the 4th highest (Kilimanjaro), so this should be a piece of cake. (Remind me (and my sore quads) later that I said that!) Apparently there is a famous carnivorous plant and the world's largest flowers on this trek - I can't wait to see them!

In addition to the climb, I'll spend several days trekking the jungle and travelling by boat along the Kinabatangang River. Hope to see pygmy elephants (so excited!), wild boar, otters, orangutans, and lot of monkeys. I'll visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center where they rehab these amazing injured, orphaned, or domesticated animals for re-entry to the wild.

A couple of days at the end to relax on Manukan Island to scuba dive and soak up the tropical sunshine (and see the famous turtles) will be perfect.

Vendor Spotlight: Michelle Walker, San Francisco Wedding Photographer

Ever since Michelle Walker was a little girl bouncing on her Papa’s knee looking at his beautiful photography, she knew she wanted to follow in his footsteps. So many years later, she enrolled in San Francisco’s Academy of Art school for photography and in her final semester, assisted a wedding photojournalist. It was love at first snap for her. While Michelle feels fortunate to do travel photography on her time off from weddings, weddings are the real icing on the cake for her.

“I love the raw emotion,” she tells us, “and I get to spend the BEST day with people—brides are excited, nervous, stressed...it's awesome to capture those real emotions.” We asked her what inspires her and keeps her fresh and she tells us she just started a photo project called The 100andOne Project, created to keep her photography just that. It’s a pure, simple, elegant way to photograph portraits. 100 days only, one set, one prop and one light. Her goal is to get 100 different sessions and potentially turning it into a book.

So why do we love Michelle and her images? Beyond the fact that she’s delightful and witty, you can expect gorgeous, relaxed and fun photography of your Big Day. Her goal is to capture the emotions of the day rather than just a record of who was there and what events took place—she photographs in an unobtrusive style giving you the feeling that she wasn’t even there. The wonderful couple met while trekking in Tibet. Really. Just goes to show that you can meet the person of your dreams anywhere! And these two must be soul-mates to fall in love after a week of no showers! The fabulous Kimberly Thompson officiated their touching and personal ceremony... it was just us and it was just perfect.

Devon & Andrei were married in Devon's parents home in Saratoga. It took a week to set-up the tent. There were 20 full-size chandeliers. It was OFFTHEHOOK awesome! Devon and her lovely mom own a fabulous French inspired boutique in Campell called Vintage and Vogue and I could sense their touch on every detail of this amazing wedding. I'm pretty sure those fabulous antique french loveseats will be in the shop (or in Devon & Andrei's living room) soon!
